Volunteer

Our students need people like you. You don’t need to be a bookworm or the scholarly type. You just need to be passionate about helping others fulfill their literacy goals.

One-on-One Tutor

Help a student reach their literacy goals by meeting with them one-on-one for teaching and mentoring. Opportunities exist to assist English as a Second Language (ESL) students, Adult Basic Education (ABE) students, and General Equivalency Diploma (GED) students. Literacy Center Staff will assist with initial preparations, provide curriculum, and continuously support you and your student through the entire process.

  • Hours: 1-3 per week; meeting time flexible.
  • Location: The Literacy Center or another public location that is agreed upon by both student and tutor.
  • Requirements: Turn in monthly attendance reports. No previous teaching or tutoring experience required.

Classroom Instructor

Support and encourage an entire classroom of students as they pursue their goals by being a classroom instructor. A classroom instructor prepares for and teaches a class of 5-10 students. Teaching curriculum and materials are provided.

  • Hours: 1.5 – 3 per week; a six-month commitment is required.
  • Location: The Literacy Center
  • Requirements: Some teaching experience preferred.

Reception

If you enjoy meeting new people, then this position is for you! Assisting with front desk reception includes greeting visitors, answering the phone, and getting to know many of the amazing students of the Literacy Center.

  • Hours: Minimum 2 hours per week; preferred hours between 3:30pm-7:30pm
  • Location: The Literacy Center
  • Requirements: Customer Service Skills

New Student Registration and Testing

Welcome new students during their registration appointment. Help new students complete intake forms and proctor and grade their pre-assessment.

  • Hours: Monday and Wednesday, 10:00am – 12:30pm
  • Location: The Literacy Center
  • Requirements: Customer Service Skills

Marketing and Communication

Use your communication, marketing, photography, or videography skills to support the Literacy Center. Opportunities exist to assist with planning and implementing social media communication, special event marketing, and monthly newsletters. Help plan and create student success videos or take pictures at special events for marketing campaigns.

  • Hours: Flexible
  • Location: The Literacy Center
  • Requirements: Interest and skill in marketing, communications, and/or public relations

Please contact us for more details about the above volunteer opportunities. All volunteers are required to attend a one hour orientation. If you choose to work directly with students, you must attend a five hour training that is held on a Friday.

Advocate

Speak up and support literacy programs so we can break cycles of poverty, poor health, and crime. Tell your friends, neighbors, and colleagues about the importance and impact of an educated community.

  • WaveMakers support our social media fund drives.
  • Supporters encourage adults with low reading skills to visit and find out what it means to be a student here.
